19 municipalities
The ring of Flemish municipalities around the capital, Brussels, is called the Vlaamse Rand. This ‘Rand’ (periphery) is called Vlaams (Flemish) because it lies entirely in Flanders and because its official language is Dutch. It comprises the following 19 municipalities: Asse, Beersel, Dilbeek, Drogenbos, Grimbergen, Hoeilaart, Kraainem, Linkebeek, Machelen, Meise, Merchtem, Overijse, Sint-Genesius-Rode, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Tervuren, Vilvoorde, Wemmel, Wezembeek-Oppem and Zaventem. Together they have about 400,000 inhabitants.

You will find more information about each of these municipalities on the Local Statistics website set up by the Flemish Government’s Study Department. It contains figures and statistics about inhabitants and businesses, and also about virtually every policy area: housing, spatial planning, environment, welfare, culture and so on. You can retrieve these data for each municipality or for the Vlaamse Rand as a whole.
